If you are planning to visit Niagara Falls for the first time and want to see it from both the Canadian and United States sides of the border, here are two ways you can get from the U.S. into Canada. There are also some activities included that you can do nearby Niagara Falls on the Canadian side that are fun for the whole family.

Taxi/Shuttle

Starting out on the New York, U.S. side of Niagara Falls, it would be easiest to take a taxi to Rainbow Bridge, where the two countries connect, then take a shuttle across the bridge into Canada. After going through customs, you can take a taxi to Toronto, or any point nearby.

If you want to take a taxi from New York into Canada, you can, but it would be more expensive, since the time is metered and getting through customs could take a while. However, if you are planning to stay overnight or longer in Canada, and do not want to carry your luggage across the border, taking a taxi into Canada would be the most convenient way.

By Foot

If you want to just spend the day in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, walk across the bridge from the New York side. Take only what you need, such as a purse or wallet, a camera, and a hat. There is a toll to cross the bridge, but it's only half a dollar each way if you go by foot or on a bicycle.

If you do want to take your luggage with you, you can carry it while you walk and store your big items in lockers at the bus terminal. Note that you will need an ID to get back into the U.S. If you are over the age of 15, you will need one of the following:

  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • Enhanced Driver's License
  • Trusted Traveler Program Card

If you are 15 or younger, you will only need a copy of your birth certificate. Make sure you check the border information web sites to see that you are fully updated about border crossing regulations.

Activities

There are many activities in the Niagara Falls Ontario side that you can do, such as taking a ride on a Ferris wheel, or going up a tower that gives you a wonderful view of Niagara. Boat tours offer views up close to Bridal Veil Falls, and the famous Horseshoe Falls. You will get so close to the falls that you can get sprayed with water. It is an experience of a lifetime.

If you go during the summer, which is the most popular time of year to visit, try to go during one of either the U.S.A.'s or Canada's birthdays. You will see fireworks and nightly illumination of the waterfalls. Niagara Falls is packed with fun activities, so start planning now which way you want to cross over the border.
